The Inspiration: Louella Twig’s Bookshop

I adore bookshops, libraries, and basically anywhere that books congregate, greeting us with their stories and information. And so, bookish fantasies that take place where books dwell are especially welcome on my shelves. This sweet story featuring a traveling bookshop run by proprietor Louella Twig inspired me to create a bookish bath salt featuring the woody aromas of amyris and frankincense serrata essential oils.

As a book witch, Louella has an uncanny ability to suggest the perfect book, the book someone needs to read. Sometimes these suggestions are welcome, while other times they are not. Louella soon finds herself called to adventure outside the comfort of her bookshop as she strives to help out an old teacher with his own bookish issue.

Twig’s Traveling Tomes has all the goodies that we love in a cozy fantasy story: found family, heartfelt character growth, whimsical settings, and cuddly animal companions. My favorite part of this book is the humor. It gave me some great chuckles, and that is never a bad thing!

How To Make Bookish Bath Salts with Chamomile Flowers

Chamomile fills many comforting teacups in Louella’s bookshop and it is a wonderful bath herb that brings relaxation for the mind and helpful skin-soothing properties to the tub.

Amyris essential oil brings a warm vanilla undertone and is used to support a sense of tranquil calmness: like opening a beloved book. Frankincense serrata has more of a resinous aroma and is grounding.

Bookish Chamomile Bath Salt Recipe

Ingredients

¼  cup dried chamomile flowers
1 cup Epsom salt
½ cup coarse Himalayan salt
1 teaspoon carrier oil such as fractionated coconut oil, almond oil, apricot kernel oil, or olive oil
4 drops amyris essential oil
2 drops frankincense serrata essential oil

Instructions

  1. Place the salts and chamomile flowers in a bowl. Stir to combine.

  2. In a separate small bowl, pour in your choice of carrier oil and drop in the essential oils. Stir well to incorporate the essential oil into the carrier. This helps to properly disperse the essential oil. (NOTE: The carrier oil will make your bathtub slippery. Use caution when getting in or out of the tub.)

  3. Pour the oil mixture into the dry salt mixture.

  4. Stir again and break up any lumps formed by the liquids.

  5. Package your bath salts in a pretty jar. Seal well to keep the scent intact.

  6. Label and enjoy using 1 to 2 cups of the bookish chamomile bath salt mixture per bath.

  7. Herbal Bathtub Tea: Add the bath mixture to a muslin bag, tie it closed at the top, and add it to the bathtub. Fill the tub with hot water and let your bath bundle steep until the water cools to a bathing temperature. (Don’t have a muslin bag on hand? Use a long sock and tie the top off to make a bath sachet at home!)

  8. Enjoy your soak!

Chamomile Caution: Chamomile can cause allergic reactions for those with allergies to the ragweed family.

📜 A Note from the Nerdy Fairy Archive for Bathtub Bookwyrms

  • While we love a magical soak, safety is the most important ingredient! Please keep the following in mind before diving into a Bathtub Bookwyrm brew:

  • Slippery Surface: Oils, salts, and botanicals can make your tub slick. Please step carefully.

  • The Patch Test: If you have sensitive skin, do a patch test on a small part of your skin before diving into a full-body bath.  Even fairies have allergies!

  • Consult Your Healthcare Professional: If you are pregnant, nursing, or have a medical condition, check with a healthcare professional before using new herbs or essential oils.

  • The Soggy Page Clause: I recommend a sturdy bath tray to keep your books (and e-readers) safe from the herbal depths of your tub. Bonus! You can use the bath tray to hold cookies, tea, and a candle.

Individual results may vary. Enjoy your ritual responsibly!

Be sure to pick up a copy of this adorable, funny, super cozy book for your own reading this fall!

And until next time, nerdy fairies, may your bath be soothing and your book unputdownable!
