The Inspiration: Sea Adventures of Marin and Crew

As someone who lives in Colorado, my time in the ocean has been limited. And so reading the cozy tome Sea of Charms by Sarah Beth Durst gave me a bookside seat to the beauty of the sea and inspired me to craft an ocean blue bath complete with seaweed to enhance the healthfulness of this bathtub brew.

Sea of Charms is the third book from The Spellshop world and it is an absolutely lovely read. We follow Marin as she sails her trusty boat while she makes supply runs and soaks up the expansiveness of the ocean along with her faithful sea serpent companion. Along the way she finds herself involved in rescue missions and making friends she hadn’t ever expected.

This cozy fantasy bookish bath is a nod to Marin as well as the rest of the amazing characters in The Spellshop world and the blue sea that connects them all.

How to Make Seaweed Bath Salts With Butterfly Pea Flowers

Seaweeds are amazing additions to bath recipes, bringing skin-soothing emollience and plentiful minerals. Choose from dulse, Irish moss, bladderwrack, and kelp for the bath. These sea vegetables bring the ocean to your tub. The butterfly pea flowers impart a beautiful sea-blue color to the water while the lavender and rosemary offer a Mediterranean seaside aroma.

Sea & Blossom Bath Salts Recipe

Ingredients

2 cups sea salt
1 cup Epsom salt
1 cup dried seaweed flakes, choose from dulse, Irish moss, kelp, or bladderwrack flakes
½ cup baking soda
½ cup dried butterfly pea blossoms
¼ cup lavender blossoms
8 drops rosemary essential oil
2 teaspoons of carrier oil such as fractionated coconut oil, almond oil, apricot kernel, or olive oil

Instructions

  1. Place the salts, seaweed flakes, baking soda, butterfly pea flowers, and lavender blossoms in a bowl. Stir to combine.

  2. In a separate small bowl, pour in your choice of carrier oil and drop in the rosemary essential oil. Stir well to incorporate the essential oil into the carrier oil or soluble. This helps to properly disperse the essential oil. (NOTE: using a carrier oil will make your bathtub slippery, use caution when getting in or out of the tub)

  3. Pour the oil mixture into the dry salt mixture.

  4. Stir again and break up any lumps formed by the liquids.

  5. Package your salt bath in a pretty jar. Seal well to keep the scent intact.

  6. Label and enjoy using 1 to 2 cups of the sea & blossom salt mixture per bath and prepare as a bathtub tea.

  7. Herbal Bathtub Tea: Add the bath mixture to a muslin bag, tie it closed at the top, and add it to the bathtub. Fill the tub with hot water and let your bath bundle steep until the water cools to a bathing temperature. (Don’t have a muslin bag on hand? Use a long sock and tie the top off to make a bath sachet at home!)

  8.  Enjoy your soak!

Seaweed Caution: Use of seaweed in the bath may increase iodine levels in the body. If you are taking thyroid medication, please enjoy seaweed baths sparingly and speak with your doctor as needed.

📜 A Note from the Nerdy Fairy Archive for Bathtub Bookwyrms

While we love a magical soak, safety is the most important ingredient! Please keep the following in mind before diving into a Bathtub Bookwyrm brew:

  • Slippery Surface: Oils, salts, and botanicals can make your tub slick. Please step carefully.

  • The Patch Test: If you have sensitive skin, do a patch test on a small part of your skin before diving into a full-body bath.  Even fairies have allergies!

  • Consult Your Healthcare Professional: If you are pregnant, nursing, or have a medical condition, check with a healthcare professional before using new herbs or essential oils.

  • The Soggy Page Clause: I recommend a sturdy bath tray to keep your books (and e-readers) safe from the herbal depths of your tub. Bonus! You can use the bath bridge to hold cookies, tea, and a candle.

Individual results may vary. Enjoy your ritual responsibly!

What book should I create a bath for next? Tell me your favorite cozy read in the comments!

And until next time, nerdy fairies, may your bath be soothing and your book unputdownable!
